This session will explore how academic skills and leadership are interconnected, noting how our students can shine both as learners and leaders. We will focus on how to develop leadership by fostering empathy, creativity, and courage. Finally, we will consider why metacognition is an essential tool for leadership and what kind of leadership will be needed for an unpredictable future. We will discuss our own role as leaders and strategise how we can foster an environment that allows new leaders to flourish in our schools. Join Dr Louise Aukland (researcher and project lead at Oxford University) as she takes us ‘back to basics’ with the human brain and explores how we can harness the neuroplasticity of the teenage brain to improve wellbeing in our schools and classrooms. We’ll look at common stress triggers in teenagers and reflect on small changes that we, as teachers and leaders, can make to reduce these and make our schools and classrooms happier places.
