New student facing resource to support International GCSE ESL Writing exam (9280/W)

We’re pleased to share a new resource designed to help students prepare for the OxfordAQA International GCSE English as a Second Language Writing exam on 11 May 2026.

Written by the Lead Examiner, this guidance document provides clear reminders, FAQs and practical tips that students can use in the final run up to the exam. It highlights how students should approach the Writing paper and what examiners are looking for in successful responses.

The resource also includes brand new student exemplars from the 9280 Writing exam, each accompanied by commentary from the Lead Examiner to help students understand how marks are awarded.

Although the document is written for students, teachers may find it a helpful tool to use in class or to share directly with learners.

This release represents the beginning of a wider enhancement of our resource offer. We are currently developing additional materials for the next academic year, which will be available from September 2026.
